Look, it’s a 12 year old Chrysler so that’s a big deal ok?

Kinja'd!!!

Also inspection day really is a nerve wracking one. Sure you’ve checked everything before hand but you’re still waiting for that phone call of “yeah Mr Famous we’ve found XYZ wrong so it’ll be $x,xxx.xx to fix and we’ll have her back to you tomorrow... Oh yeah and you need new tires to pass... and brakes... And your sister is ugly.”

Ah the fine state of “we’ll get your money, one way or another” Virginia. I’m not a fan of the new sticker location either. It’s been the center of the windshield for as long as I can remember (30 years of driving).

Oh yea, congrats on passing!

Reasons it’s good to live in places with no such regulations.

Agreed. However there is a point where it seems like it may be keeping the truly unsafe off the roads, not just the “your tires are 1/32 under spec you fail”. Nah, these are the “ma’am you’re missing a rear brake caliper, are driving on the belts of your tires and the windshield has no less than 45 cracks in it”

It really confused me when I saw it. I had to look around for others like it. Funny thing is I have no idea how long they’ve been doing the new location and have never noticed.

True. But it’s just money, it’s not excessive amounts of time and hassle. I mean, we’ll all be taxed out of the state in about 5 years, but for the time being we don’t have to deal with safety inspectors that have to keep up their rejection quota so they can pass their stancebro buddy’s ride that is held together with zip ties and plastidip.

This is why we have police. I’m pretty sure there are laws against a number of these.

Most of us keep our cars in at least half-decent operating condition.

At least we* don’t have emissions. Yet.

*NoVA does, but that’s like an entirely different state

I am four years away from having *none* of my three current running cars under 35 years old, and thus all exempt. Ha. (NC)

(30 years of driving)

I remember when there used to be two stickers, one for registration and one for inspection (started driving in VA 35 years ago). TX, where I live now, had two different stickers up until about two years ago.

I’m happy to do inspections to help keep dangerous vehicles off the road. There are certainly flaws with the system, but I’d rather live some place that has them than not.

That inspection sticker was a massive pain to scrape off once it became obsolete. The registration peels off pretty easily, but the inspection sticker used strong glue and was designed to break into a zillion pieces when scraped off, and was in a hard to reach location. I assume shops had a good scraper tool, but it took me forever using what I had on hand.

Down here it’s much fewer years for emission exempt, and the safety inspection isn’t really strict, but *yes*, it does have to be 35 to be off the books/antique. Of the five cars in my stable, only the Benz with some half million miles is younger than 35...

Where in NC has emissions? The only Virginia counties/cities that have emissions are the DC suburbs.

TX just uses a single registration sticker on the windshield these days (they formerly had plate stickers). Here in MA, they have a plate sticker for registration, and a window sticker for inspection.

So MA and VA are the same that way. The one sticker for both sounds more efficient, but I don’t know how Texas handles state inspections.

Kinja'd!!! facw > interstate366, now In The Industry

Basically in TX shops have to report the results of the inspection to the state (which seems pretty common), so basically they just don’t let you register/re-register the car if you don’t have a current inspection on file. In the age of computers and the internet, that’s a pretty easy thing to manage.

I’m actually happy they have state inspections in Virginia. Let’s be honest, most people don’t care for their cars like it should.

I can take a short drive into Maryland and the piles of crap people drive up there are downright scary.

And that, my friend, is why my state (Mississippi) probably did away with inspections. We would only have maybe 10 cars on the road.

Honestly though, our inspections were a joke when they were required. They would literally just make sure all your exterior lights work, the horn works, make sure your tint wasn’t too dark, and that’s it. Five minutes tops and you were set for another year.

I remember going with my father some 20+ years ago to get his vehicle inspected (VA). We’d pull into a gas station bay, they’d have him hit all the lights, turn signals, etc, new sticker boom. Sure has come a long way

You should be asking yourself: How often do accidents caused by equipment failures happen in states with no inspections vs ones with them?

The stats actually show that states with these inspections have more accidents due to equipment failures than states without them.
